Matrix Displays

TetherX supports LED matrix displays for ANPR applications, showing detected licence plates in real-time.

Compatibility

TetherX supports displays using the SDHX, HX & HXE Sign Protocol (over serial and TCP/IP).

The main difference between compatible displays is the physical size and how many characters can be displayed at one time. While displays usually support both serial and Ethernet connections, we recommend TCP/IP for maximum stability.

Tip: A popular choice for ANPR matrix displays is Spectra Displays. Ensure you purchase the HX/HXE version - CPower versions are not compatible.

Warning: Some manufacturers offer versions of the same display with and without HX/HXE protocol support. Verify compatibility before purchasing.

Setting Up in TetherX

Step 1: Enable on the Camera

  1. Go to AdminCameras and select your ANPR camera
  2. In the Details tab, find ANPR LED Matrix Display
  3. Toggle it on

Step 2: Configure the TetherBox

  1. Go to AdminTetherBoxes and select the TetherBox connected to your matrix display
  2. Open the Settings tab
  3. Scroll to and expand the Matrix Display section
  4. Toggle Show ANPR on Display on
  5. Configure the connection settings:
    • Display Type - Select Spectra Displays (or your display manufacturer)
    • Connection Type - TCP for Ethernet or Serial for RS232
    • Display IP - The matrix display's IP address (TCP only)
    • Display IP Port - Default is 10001 (TCP only)
    • TTY Port / Port Speed - Serial port settings (Serial only)
    • Display Camera - Select which ANPR camera's plates to display
    • Message Delay - How long to show each plate in seconds (default: 10)
    • Default Message - Text shown when no plate is detected (e.g., "ANPR IN USE")
    • After Message - Text shown after plate display (e.g., "IMAGES RECORDED")

Click Test Display to verify the connection - a test message will be sent to the display. The matrix display will show detected licence plates for the configured duration, then switch back to the default message.

Example Installation

A typical ANPR installation is configured to:

  1. Show "ANPR IN USE" as the default message
  2. When a licence plate is detected, display the plate for 20 seconds (or until the next vehicle arrives)
  3. Show "IMAGES RECORDED" before returning to the default message

Example ANPR matrix display installation

Limitations

  • Only one matrix display can be connected per TetherBox
  • Only SDHX, HX & HXE Sign Protocol is supported

Tip: Need a different protocol or additional features? Let us know - we regularly add support for new display types.
